About Us

The Making Ends Meet Poverty Simulation (MEM) is run by members of the Intergroup Relations and Social Justice (IRSJ) Lab at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada.

The MEM Poverty Simulation has been taken from the Winnipeg United Way Poverty Simulation, a Canadian version of the Missouri Community Action Network Poverty Simulation. The MEM Poverty Simulation has been adapted to replicate the British Columbian poverty experience, and was carefully developed in the IRSJ lab.

MEM Pro D day

Since 2016, our team of well-trained undergraduate research assistants, honour’s students, graduate students and post-graduate fellow’s have come together to prepare and run the Making Ends Meet Poverty Simulation.

With the supervision of Dr. Stephen Wright, students dedicate hundreds of hours to training and organizing materials for the simulation so that each simulation can closely mimic the experience of poverty, giving participants a realistic glimpse into the reality of their peers and community members. Without the hard work of these dedicated students, the MEM Poverty Simulation would not be possible.

Research assistants and students working in the IRSJ lab go beyond fulfilling the roles of service providers in the MEM Poverty Simulation, with many RA’s and students leading outreach initiatives, training fellow RA’s, collecting and analyzing data, and creating new simulation materials. We are proud of our students and RA’s work, and we hope that we can showcase their hard work to you.

Information on both the Winnipeg United Way Poverty Simulation and the Missouri Community Action Network Poverty Simulation can be found by following the links. The IRSJ lab is not affiliated with the above organizations.
